We worked with designer Leendert de Vos’ on this terraced London house project. The client’s initial inclination was towards an elegant, Parisian style. De Vos is known for his surprising, layered and bold approach to design. Working with both these styles, we worked to provide stabilising, playful features to keep the older bones of the building from seeming staid.

The wallcovering in the first-floor drawing room is made from kraft paper, and the designer created candle holders from a scale scoop, a meat hook and a sink strainer. The kitchen, accented by black stained oak, features partitions in an Art Nouveau style.

Allowing the client to bring her private home life to centre stage

When creating the look for the house, the library/drawing room provided an obvious departure point for the overall concept. We designed bespoke panels to frame the fireplace, set against spice-brown paint echoed the form and tones in the artwork, allowing the room ‘to feel a bit darker, like an evening space, like a salon’.

Warmth – both literal and figurative – is now a defining characteristic of the house, from tangerine ceilings to soft details like the ribbon-shaped shelf fluttering above the radiator in the hall. The completed project reflects our signature style, whilst honouring the wishes of the client, an actor with French heritage, and de Vos’ designs allow her to bring her private home life to centre stage in the house.
